FFTP, CEPUDO and FUNAZUCAR Launch Campaign to Distribute Prenatal Vitamins to More Than 135,000 Women in Honduras
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (June 24, 2024) – In a significant step toward improving maternal and child health, Food For The Poor (FFTP), CEPUDO, and FUNAZUCAR have launched the “For You and Your Baby” campaign.
This initiative aims to distribute prenatal vitamins provided by FFTP partner Catholic Medical Mission Board to more than 135,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women across six departments in Honduras. The campaign will be administered through 80 health centers with the backing of six sugar companies and regional health offices.
“Ensuring that pregnant and breastfeeding women have access to essential vitamins is crucial for the health and development of their babies,” FFTP President/CEO Ed Raine said. “This campaign is a testament to our commitment to improving the lives of the most vulnerable populations in Honduras.”
The “For You and Your Baby” campaign also will conduct awareness sessions about the importance of vitamin supplements. These sessions, supported by medical staff at each health center, will educate women on the benefits of prenatal vitamins for the growth of babies and the strengthening of their immune systems.
“This initiative showcases the power of partnerships in addressing public health challenges,” said Linda Coello, President and Founder of CEPUDO, FFTP’s longtime partner in Honduras. “By working together with FUNAZUCAR and the sugar companies, we can reach thousands of women who need our support the most. Our goal is to ensure every mother and child has the best start in life.”
FUNAZUCAR, the social arm of the sugar agro-industry in Honduras, plays a pivotal role in this campaign. The foundation, with the involvement of Compañía Azucarera Hondureña S.A. (CAHSA), Azucarera La Grecia, Compañía Azucarera Tres Valles (CATV), Compañía Azucarera Chumbagua, Azucarera Choluteca S.A. (ACHSA), and Azucarera Yojoa S.A. (AYSA), aims to strengthen primary medical care by supplying essential medicines to the public health system.
The campaign’s comprehensive approach includes both group awareness talks and individual consultations, ensuring that each woman receives a six-month supply of prenatal vitamins. This initiative is part of broader efforts within the sugar sector to enhance health and nutrition for families in Honduras.
