#GivingTuesday 2021: Food For The Poor Joins Global Movement to Raise Funds for Housing, Food
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Nov. 23, 2021) In a year when inflation and surging food prices are deepening the pain for struggling families in the countries where the charity serves, Food For The Poor’s participation in the annual #GivingTuesday campaign is even more important.
The charity’s goal is to raise funds to build homes for families in desperate need of a safe home as well as to provide lifesaving food.
On #GivingTuesday, which is November 30, all gifts will be tripled, thanks to a generous FFTP donor.
In the United States, inflation can mean the difference between choosing a favorite brand and a different item in the grocery store. But for families living in extreme poverty in the Caribbean and Latin America, the effect is much more profound and can mean the difference between eating and not eating.
The pain of inflation follows 18 months of crippling economic hardships because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
On top of that, many are living in unsafe structures, worrying every time it rains that their belongings will be ruined or washed away.
“Thanksgiving and the holidays remind us all to be grateful for our blessings and to remember our brothers and sisters who live in extreme poverty,” FFTP President/CEO Ed Raine said. “We have the power to be a true beacon of hope and light to those who are suffering and to make a positive transformative change in the lives of others who need our help with the gift of a home and food.”
FFTP joined the #GivingTuesday global movement nine years ago to bring awareness to the plight of those living in poverty.
Founded in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y, a community and cultural center in New York City, #GivingTuesday is recognized on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. It is a day set aside to inspire people to collaborate to improve their communities and support the causes they believe in.
Over the years, FFTP donors have responded generously. In 2019, for example, 249 homes were built for destitute families in the Caribbean and Latin America, far surpassing the charity’s #GivingTuesday goal to raise funds to build 48 homes in 48 hours.
