Prepare your heart with “40 days of thanks”
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Sept. 30, 2009) – The hustle and bustle of the holiday season –shopping for gifts, making travel plans, remembering to defrost the turkey – can sometimes overshadow the real meaning of Thanksgiving. By participating in Food For The Poor’s “40 Days Of Thanks” with your church, school or organization you will prepare your family’s hearts for gratitude.
Starting Oct. 17, “40 Days Of Thanks” will encourage individuals to save 50 cents or more each day for 40 days to help the poor. On Thanksgiving Day, after the turkeys have been carved and the dishes cleaned, donations throughout the country will be collected, combined and counted to build homes for the destitute in the Caribbean and Latin America.
“In 1620, the pilgrims journeyed to America to escape religious persecution,” said Angel Aloma, Executive Director of Food For The Poor. “The legacy of thanks, and the feast has survived the centuries. Through their first year of hardships, the pilgrims recognized that everything, including life, is a gift from God.”
“40 Days Of Thanks” is a way to encourage spiritual reflection, the chance to make daily sacrifices, and to help save one child, one family at a time. Today, nearly one in two children lives in poverty. Food For The Poor, the largest international relief and development organization in the nation, is working to break the cycle of poverty that has ensnared generations.
To start a new Thanksgiving family tradition designed to honor God and to thank Him for His blessings and His grace, please call 1-877-654-2960, ext. 6988. Checks should be made out to Food For The Poor and include a special code “SC# 69985.” All gifts are tax-deductible.
Food For The Poor, the largest international relief and development organization in the nation, does much more than feed millions of hungry poor in 17 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. We provide emergency relief assistance, clean water, medicines, educational materials, homes, support for orphans and the aged, skills training and micro-enterprise development assistance, with more than 96 percent of all donations going directly to programs that help the poor.
