COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (July 30, 2013) – The Hope for Haitians Board and Food For The Poor invite you to attend the 12th annual An Evening in the Tropics,Saturday, Aug. 24 at Giovanni’s Restaurant & Convention Center. Come enjoy the melodies of a steel pan and a heavenly slice of key lime pie as Illinois residents gather to raise money to complete the second phase of The Love Friendship Village in Savanne Carre, Terrier Rouge, Haiti.
Master of ceremonies for this year’s An Evening in the Tropics is veteran broadcast journalist Mike Robinson. The evening also will feature a cocktail reception, silent auction, and formal dinner with friends and members of the surrounding communities. Bidding on silent auction prizes – such as electronics, jewelry, vacations, golf and dining packages – offer opportunities for guests to shop and support the cause. Guests will have a chance to win a six-day, five-night stay at the luxurious Beach & Golf Resort Fiesta Americana Grand Los Cabos in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

The keynote speaker for the evening is Archbishop Bernadito Cleopas Auza, who serves as the Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti.
Area residents, along with Hope for Haitians Board Trustees Pat Bachrodt, Tom Lorden and Bill Clancy, traveled to Haiti in June with Food For The Poor to inaugurate phase one of Love Friendship Village firsthand. Homes for 40 families with solar-powered lights and access to water and sanitation were built with proceeds from last year’s gala. Additionally, each family received two goats and fruit-bearing trees to help improve the village’s access to proper nutrition. The travelers also visited additional Food For The Poor villages built with money raised by The Hope for Haitians Board to see firsthand their progress.
“Being an eyewitness to the poverty and the transformation that our villages provide the Haitian people was remarkable,” said Virginia Canavan, a Hope for Haitians Board member.

Food For The Poor, named by The Chronicle of Philanthropy as the largest international relief and development organization in the nation, does much more than feed millions of the hungry poor in 17 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. This interdenominational Christian ministry provides emergency relief assistance, clean water, medicines, educational materials, homes, support for orphans and the aged, skills training and micro-enterprise development assistance, with more than 95 percent of all donations going directly to programs that help the poor.
