Savor the Flavors of the Caribbean, ‘Taste the Islands’ and Help the Poor
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (May 23, 2017) On June 1, the Miramar Cultural Center in Miramar, Fla., will bring together all things Caribbean for this year’s Taste the Islands Experience.
The evening will include a preview of the new season of Taste the Islands, a nationally syndicated food and culture series on Create TV presented by American Public Television. Guests at the event will get to savor the delicious meals of South Florida’s Hugh “Chef Irie” Sinclair of Jamaica and Cynthia “Chef Thia” Verna of Haiti.
The Taste the Islands Experience is presented by Taste the Islands creators Blondie Ras Productions, with the co-sponsorship of Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam and will feature gourmet hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and music with an island vibe. There also will be a silent auction to benefit nonprofit partner Food For The Poor for projects in Jamaica and Haiti.
“Our team has been enamored with the idea of working with Food for the Poor for a few years. They do so much for families in need in our home islands, and we’ve been looking for an opportunity to do something for them,” said Calibe Thompson, Executive Producer of Taste the Islands. “The silent auction at the Taste the Islands Experience is a first step. We believe as our broadcast and event production footprint grows, we and the people we serve will be able to give so much more to Food for the Poor’s awesome enterprise of compassion.”
Food For The Poor Executive Director Angel Aloma will speak about the organization’s mission and how the charity is helping to lift one family at a time out of poverty, and about the importance of the philanthropic support of those representing the diaspora.
“Food For The Poor is celebrating 35 years of service and it’s amazing to witness the life-transforming changes that tens of thousands of families are making, thanks to God’s blessings and the generous support of our donors,” said Aloma. “We’re truly honored and thankful to be recognized by the local Caribbean community and for the support of Blondie Ras Productions.”
Taste the Islands Experience will be Thursday, June 1, 2017, from 6-10 p.m. at the Miramar Cultural Center, 2400 Civic Center Place, Miramar, Fla. Tickets are $35 for general admission and $65 for VIP admission. For details visit: www.ttiexperience.com
In addition to the Jamaican and Haitian-inspired dishes, a friend to the show, Chef Barbara, will create appetizers representing Barbados. Guests will receive gifts for enrolling as supporting members of WPBT2 South Florida PBS.
Taste the Islands’ Chefs Irie and Thia also will lend their culinary talents at Food For The Poor’s Taste of Hope Food and Wine Experience, Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017 in Boca Raton, Fla.

Food For The Poor, one of the largest international relief and development organizations in the nation, does much more than feed millions of the hungry poor primarily in 17 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. This interdenominational Christian ministry provides emergency relief assistance, clean water, medicines, educational materials, homes, support for orphans and the aged, skills training and micro-enterprise development assistance. Over the last 10 years, fundraising and other administrative costs averaged less than 5 percent of our expenses; more than 95 percent of all donations went directly to programs that help the poor.
