Sixth-Grader Exceeds Goal at Second Annual Golf Classic to Benefit the Poor
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (April 27, 2017) Thanks to the success of the Second Annual Rafe Cochran Golf Classic, dozens of students currently attending Chester Primary and Infant School in St. Ann, Jamaica, will have a new school building later this year.
Twenty foursomes competed in the golf tournament at Mayacoo Lakes Country Club’s 18-hole course in West Palm Beach, Fla., on April 22 to support Rafe’s charity of choice Food For The Poor. The tournament exceeded Rafe’s goals, thanks to the vision and philanthropic efforts of the 12-year-old.
“Being able to help build a school to help educate children in Jamaica honors and touches me,” said Rafe. “I really enjoy using my talents to help others.”
Rafe and his parents, Jay and Diahann, visited Chester Primary and Infant School with Food For The Poor in March. The school needs repairs and is severely overcrowded because the 3-to-5 year-old students are sharing the school with elementary and middle school students. Rafe’s project will build a separate school building for the younger children.
Rafe began making a name in the golfing world at the age of 6. When he was 9, he became one of Food For The Poor’s youngest donors using his skills on the links to raise money to build nine homes in Haiti.
“I have to keep reminding myself that Rafe is only 12 years old, the way he speaks about the less fortunate in the world is truly remarkable,” said Angel Aloma, Executive Director of Food For The Poor. “The charity golfing events were his idea, and with the loving support of his family and friends, his vision has become a reality and has helped to transform lives in Haiti and soon will make a lasting impact in Jamaica.”
The Palm Beach Academy sixth-grader competes in countless golf tournaments internationally and nationally and hopes the Rafe Cochran Golf Classic will become an annual tradition in South Florida.
