UBC in Coral Gables donates relief items for Haiti
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (November 25, 2008) –The Sunday before Thanksgiving, University Baptist Church (UBC Miami) in Coral Gables spoke at three services about “spontaneous compassion.” At the end of each service Pastor Bill White challenged his congregation to go out into the community and return with emergency relief supplies to ship to Haiti.
The congregation realized the people of Haiti desperately needed their spontaneous compassion. In less than 12 hours UBC Miami had successfully loaded a 24-foot truck with hurricane relief supplies to assist victims of the four storms that ravaged Haiti during the 2008 hurricane season. Representatives from UBC Miami delivered 12.5 tons urgently needed canned meats, fish, dried beans and water to Food For The Poor in Coconut Creek the next day.
“At Food For The Poor’s feeding center in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, approximately 2,500 pounds of rice are cooked a day,” said Angel Aloma, Food For The Poor’s executive director. “More than 15,000 people are served the rice, in addition to a meat and vegetable stew.”
Food For The Poor currently feeds millions of destitute children and their families in Haiti. Through its expansive network of island-wide distribution hubs, Food For The Poor supports thousands of partners feeding the poorest of the poor. In Haiti, Food For the Poor maintains an extensive house-building program, a major tree restoration effort and sustainability projects that provide employment to the Haitian people.
