COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (April 11, 2013) – The Very Reverend Burchell McPherson, who serves as treasurer of the Food For The Poor Board of Directors, was appointed today by Pope Francis as Bishop of Montego Bay, Jamaica. He most recently served as a priest in Kingston, where he was a voice for education in the fight against poverty.
“We are so happy for him and proud of his wonderful accomplishment,” said Robin Mahfood, President/CEO of Food For The Poor. “Please pray for him in his new position, as we ask for the Holy Spirit to bless him in the new work laid out for him. He is a true blessing to the poor.”
A convert to Catholicism in 1976, since ordination he has served in several pastoral and administrative roles, most recently as pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Parish and the St. Marin de Porres Mission in Kingston. From 2004 to 2011, he was very active with Food For The Poor-Jamaica, first being named a member of the board and later on becoming chair. During that time, he was instrumental in guiding the organization in its mission of meeting the social and spiritual needs of the less fortunate.
He also served as Board Chairman of Dupont Infant & Primary and St. Peter Claver Schools.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to continue serving on a wider basis. I serve the poor, all those who are struggling,” Bishop-elect McPherson said on Thursday in a phone call with the leader of Food For The Poor. “My calling is to serve, not to be served. Ask everyone to pray for me.”
Bishop-elect McPherson will be formally installed on June 1 at a service in Montego Bay.
Food For The Poor, named by The Chronicle of Philanthropy as the largest international relief and development organization in the nation, does much more than feed millions of the hungry poor in 17 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America.
