Boca Grande Hope For Haitians Reaches Goal to Build 50 Homes
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (April 12, 2022) Boca Grande Hope For Haitians has reached its fundraising goal to build 50 homes and a community center in Périgny, Haiti, bringing hope to families who lost almost everything after a devastating earthquake last August.
Construction is underway on the first 20 of those new homes.
Longtime committee co-chairpersons Ben and Louise Scott, natives of Piqua, Ohio, and winter residents of Boca Grande, Fla., expressed thanks for the support Hope For Haitians received to make this year’s campaign a success.
“Together, through God’s provision and your generosity, we are transforming lives,” Ben Scott said. “It fills our hearts with joy to know these families will be relocated to safe, new homes.”
Families in Périgny already were suffering in destitute poverty before the 7.2-magnitude earthquake on Aug. 14, 2021, that killed nearly 2,500 and destroyed tens of thousands of homes in addition to businesses, schools, churches, hospitals and critical infrastructure such as bridges. Just days later, Tropical Storm Grace compounded the misery.
The area has sustained more than 80 aftershocks. Two more significant quakes struck in late January, destroying nearly 200 more homes and damaging 591 others.
Since 2009, Boca Grande Hope For Haitians has built more than 550 homes on the island nation through Food For The Poor. Most recently, the groups funded 153 homes over a three-year period in Savann Kabrit.
Because the charity has been unable to build in Savann Kabrit due to civil unrest and security issues, 33 of the homes are being moved to Périgny, meaning a total of 83 homes will be built there for families in desperate need.
FFTP President/CEO Ed Raine said through its dedication and perseverance, Boca Grande Hope For Haitians is bringing real change to families in Haiti.
“It is because of the compassion and generosity of our donors that we are able to transform the lives of the poor,” Raine said. “Over the last decade, Boca Grande Hope For Haitians has built hundreds of secure homes with sanitation and provided access to clean water. They have built community centers and schools. Food For The Poor is so grateful for everything they’ve done and continue to do to secure a brighter future for these families.”
