Food For The Poor’s We Are One Event Raising Funds to Provide 10 Million Meals
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (June 8, 2022) As families living in poverty face rising food insecurity this year, Food For The Poor is raising funds to provide 10 million meals through its annual National Celebration – We Are One on Thursday, Aug. 11.
The virtual event, an evening of unity and inspiration that will be livestreamed from the charity’s Coconut Creek headquarters, aims to raise awareness about the plight of impoverished families. It also comes as the charity celebrates its 40th anniversary, continuing its longstanding mission to provide relief to poverty-stricken children and families in the Caribbean and Latin America.
Nine-time Grammy nominee and five-time GMA Dove Awards Female Vocalist of the Year Natalie Grant is scheduled to perform.
While many countries in the Caribbean and Latin America were just beginning to see their economies return to pre-pandemic levels, rising inflation poses a new threat.
The World Bank has warned of a “human catastrophe” triggered by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, leading to a spike in food prices that will be magnified for families living in poverty.
According to the World Bank, food insecurity during the pandemic was the worst in the Caribbean nations of Haiti, Jamaica, St. Lucia and Dominica, mainly because the countries depend on imported goods.
“Many children in the countries where we serve go to sleep hungry and wake up not knowing when they will get their next meal,” FFTP President/CEO Ed Raine said.
“In the aftermath of COVID-19 and natural disasters such as the August 2021 earthquake in Haiti and back-to-back hurricanes in Central America in November 2020 and now crippling inflation, the need for food is as great as it’s ever been,” he added. “We’re asking everyone to consider what they can do.”
Thanks to a special gift-matching challenge for the National Celebration – We Are One event, every dollar donated will be matched with a dollar’s worth of food, making donors’ gifts go even further.
At last year’s event, generous donors provided 10 million meals to families suffering daily from food insecurity in the countries helped by the charity.
The We Are One Online Silent Auction will open Monday, Aug. 8, at 6 p.m. ET and will close at 9 p.m. ET on the night of the event, Thursday, Aug. 11.
