WFTV Channel 9’s Jorge Estevez to Emcee Celebration of Hope Gala
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (June 1, 2017) Jorge Estevez, News Anchor for WFTV (ABC) Channel 9 will serve as master of ceremonies for Food For The Poor’s 18th Annual Celebration of Hope Gala at the Orlando World Center Marriott, on Oct.7, 2017.
Orlando-area philanthropists are fundraising to build 25 concrete-block houses with water and sanitation, and a community center in Chantal, Haiti, for families left homeless by Hurricane Matthew. The powerful Category 4 hurricane ripped across Haiti’s peninsula eight months ago.
“As we prepare for Hurricane Season 2017, we are reminded that the road to recovery is often long and winding. Supporters of Food For The Poor in Central Florida are planning their 18th annual fundraiser, which will build homes for last year’s victims of Hurricane Matthew. We cannot thank them enough for their generosity,” said Angel Aloma, Executive Director of Food For The Poor. “We’re also honored that newsman Jorge Estevez is volunteering to emcee our event for a second time. His shared experiences with natural disasters, his heart for the suffering and his communications talents are greatly appreciated.”
Estevez traveled to Haiti with Food For The Poor to report on the charity’s rebuilding efforts after the 2010 earthquake when he worked for the CBS affiliate in Miami. He reported on the dedication of a 27-home village in Kay Petit, Léogane, funded by then 11-year-old Rachel Wheeler. Estevez also emceed the 14th Annual Celebration of Hope Gala in 2013.
Estevez first came to WFTV in 2001. He reported how the attacks of 9/11 impacted Central Florida’s tourism industry, and for next five years he anchored and reported for WFTV Channel 9 and WRDQ TV Channel 27. In 2006, he moved to Miami where he was a reporter with WFOR CBS4, and he returned to the Orlando market in 2012. Estevez also traveled to New York City to cover Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and then to Moore, Okla., to cover the tornado that touched down in the spring of 2013.
The son of Cuban immigrants, Estevez is from West New York, New Jersey. He graduated from Rutgers University with a dual degree in Journalism and Communications and is an Emmy winning journalist.
