Daysi was so severely malnourished she could barely stand by herself and was so sick she couldn’t eat. Her family lived in Honduras beneath a canopy of trees deep in a mountainside forest, surrounded by a coffee plantation. Her family barely earned $10 a week, so there was rarely enough food.
A stray pig had wandered into the shack where Daysi sat slumped in the dark. The Food For The Poor team’s staff photographer heard the pig eating something. She lit the darkened space with the flash from her camera and was horrified to see that the pig was trying to pick at Daysi’s flesh with its mouth. For Daysi, her future was dark and death truly looked imminent for this precious little girl.
Daysi never had access to clean water; she slept on the dirt floor and was starving. There was no reason to believe this vulnerable and voiceless little one had any future ahead of her.
Now Daysi’s future is bright. Her transformation is captured in the sequence of photos you see here, but the miracle of her renewed life is transcendent.
