Support Our Poverty and Hunger Relief Efforts

At Food For The Poor, feeding the hungry is at the heart of our mission. We prioritize the preservation of human dignity and compassionate care for those in need. Our approach to poverty is rooted in sustainable, community-driven solutions that empower long-term change. From 2019 to 2023, we provided 943 million meals and delivered $3.2 billion in aid to communities across Latin America and the Caribbean. Our growing network of donors and volunteers shares our belief that poverty is not inevitable—it is solvable. Water, Sanitation, Hygiene & Poverty Reduction

Your Gift Doubled for Water Day

Access to Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) remains a challenge for 161 million people in Latin America and the Caribbean, where poor water quality, inadequate sanitation facilities, and limited hygiene practices contribute to high disease burdens, reduced productivity, and persistent poverty. Without safe water and proper sanitation, children miss school due to illness, and adults struggle with productivity.

WASH interventions play a crucial role in poverty reduction by mitigating the risk of malnutrition, enteropathy, and infections. They prevent chronic inflammation caused by recurrent infections, which often results in stunted growth and impaired neurodevelopment. They ensure better outcomes for children and their families.

This World Water Day, your gift will be mathed dollar for dollar — up to $200,000 — through March 22, 2026.

Since 2008, Food For The Poor, working with trusted partners such as Water Mission, has installed 2,208 water filtration systems across Latin America and the Caribbean, including a new system completed in Peru in April 2025. In 2024 alone, the organization completed 23 water projects benefiting 84,950 people. Efforts continue to expand access to safe water: as of 2025, 13 additional projects are under construction in Peru, Honduras, and Mexico, including reverse osmosis and solar-powered treatment systems that are expected to serve approximately 213,711 more people once completed.

Clean Water in Concordia

In the Village of Concordia, families once struggled daily without clean water or basic sanitation, often spending hours fetching unsafe water from wells or rain sources. Through the Horizonte Program, Food For The Poor, FUSAL, and the community installed a safe water system and improved sanitation. Today, families have clean water at home, improving health and easing the burden of daily life.

Safe Water Transforms Montelargo

In the community of Montelargo, a new safe water treatment system is transforming daily life. The project now provides 120 families—over 600 people—with reliable access to clean drinking water, while 64 families received improved sanitation that supports better health. Once dependent on wells and improvised sources, residents now have safe water at home and are working together to maintain the system for a healthier future.

Turning Traditional Craft Into a Valuable Skill

Handcrafted Bags
Empowering Women With Hope and Dignity

Empowering Women Through Sewing is a collaborative project between Food For The Poor and Mercado Global that creates sustainable income opportunities for women in impoverished communities in Guatemala and Honduras. At dedicated sewing centers, women are trained to produce high-quality handcrafted handbags and other items. Each handbag is a unique piece of art, created by skilled artisans who use traditional techniques passed down through generations—and this is the second year in a row that supporters can purchase these beautiful purses on our website.

By working part-time, artisans can earn up to $8 a day, enough to lift themselves and their families out of poverty within just a few months. Since its launch in 2018, the program has empowered more than 800 women artisans, positively impacting 2,800 people through fair wages, cultural preservation, and economic resilience. All the proceeds from the sales of the Mercado handbags on our website are directly reinvested in the partnership.
