Beyond The Plate: Ep. 21 - This Colombian Town Is Building Its Own Future
Deep in the mountains of Colombia, teenagers like Sandra once faced treacherous daily treks to collect unsafe drinking water. Today, thanks to transformative programs serving 46 families, Sandra attends school instead of carrying heavy water jugs, and local doctors report dramatic improvements in community health. Her story highlights Food For The Poor’s sustainable community development approach—where addressing one critical need creates ripple effects across education, health, and economic opportunity.
In these same communities, families are transitioning from producing illegal crops to cultivating thriving farms. By growing export-quality blackberries, they eliminate exploitative middlemen and create legitimate livelihoods, transforming not just their present circumstances but the possibilities for future generations.
We also visit entrepreneurial schools, where students like Yohan design their own businesses—from secret recipes to custom packaging and marketing strategies. These schools serve as living business laboratories, equipping students with the skills to achieve economic independence.
"My Mr. You Can't shows up in a mirror, if you know what I'm talking about. It shows up in a mirror, even shows up in the middle of the night. Shows up right before a big event... and I'm talking about myself! I was one of my biggest enemies growing up." – Danny
