At Food For The Poor, feeding the hungry is at the heart of our mission. We prioritize the preservation of human dignity and compassionate care for those in need. Our approach to poverty is rooted in sustainable, community-driven solutions that empower long-term change. From 2019 to 2023, we provided 943 million meals and delivered $3.2 billion in aid to communities across Latin America and the Caribbean. Our growing network of donors and volunteers shares our belief that poverty is not inevitable—it is solvable. Like A Better Life for Las Queseras

The Las Queseras cheese factory in Ecuador, run by 520 Indigenous residents, sustains 110 families and anchors the local economy. Despite its importance, the factory faces challenges with limited space, outdated equipment, and strict regulatory requirements. To address these needs, Food For The Poor (FFTP) and Fundación Legado work with the community to expand and renovate the facility, modernize equipment, and provide staff training. The project also supports dairy farmers through technical internships, strengthens marketing and branding efforts, and secures essential operational permits.

These improvements increase production capacity, enhance quality, and ensure compliance with health standards. By empowering small-scale ranchers and reinforcing community participation, the initiative provides stability and opportunity for families like Sandra’s, whose livelihood depends on the success of the factory.

David

In El Salvador, David escaped extreme poverty and a life on the streets after being abandoned at a young age. Today, he pushes the boundaries as a chef for NutriFood, a local food preparation company, where he oversees the general kitchen area.

His ability to experiment and reimagine recipes has propelled his career as a chef while honoring his cultural heritage in every meal he creates. He often blends traditional Mexican flavors with creative techniques to craft unique dishes.

Growing up in Food For The Poor’s Angel Of Hope program gave David the opportunities and support to turn his passion into a thriving, successful career.

He credits the program for his success, saying, 'If I hadn’t been in the home, I don’t think I would have become a cook.'

You can change a child’s future and allow them the opportunity to discover their talents, follow their dreams, and achieve a fulfilling, successful, and productive life.

Celebrating Traditional Craft Empowering Women

Sponsor a Project
Like Empowering Women Through Sewing

Empowering Women Through Sewing is a collaborative project between Food For The Poor and Mercado Global that creates sustainable income opportunities for women in impoverished communities in Guatemala and Honduras. At dedicated sewing centers, women are trained to produce high-quality handcrafted handbags and other items. Each handbag is a unique piece of art, created by skilled artisans who use traditional techniques passed down through generations.

By working part-time, artisans can earn up to $8 a day, enough to lift themselves and their families out of poverty within just a few months. Since its launch in 2018, the program has empowered more than 800 women artisans, positively impacting 2,800 people through fair wages, cultural preservation, and economic resilience. This initiative demonstrates how ethical, community-driven development can transform lives while honoring heritage.

FFTP Magazines: SUMMER edition available for download

This issue focuses on the growing crises of hunger and poverty, and how Food For The Poor and partners are responding with hope. We feature the story of Semana Santa (Holy Week)—a cherished tradition now embraced as a season of service, with communities distributing meals, collecting donations, and engaging youth in acts of kindness.

We also share the inspiring journey of Santiago, a young boy in El Salvador with a rare genetic disorder. With no local treatment available, his family found hope through the support of FUSAL, Duke University Hospital, and our generous donors—leading to life-saving care and a new path forward.
